Use your iOS app design experience and your knowledge of game engagement loops to improve the integration of an existing Play Piano app and its in-app Play along game

This Found UX client is a unique organization that, in our opinion, can best be described as an iOS app publishing company.
The organization, consisting of between 50-100 employees, has as its core business the launch of its own iOS apps, in order to then continuously optimize them from a commercial point of view. They are very successful at this; there are apps in their portfolio with hundreds of thousands or even millions of active users.
The organization is divided into so-called “studios”. Each studio consists of its own team, including a product manager, growth manager, a QA specialist and a dedicated designer. You will be working in the Music Studio.
SITUATION
Play piano app
- Play the piano on your screen.
- In the app store since 2016.
In-app Play along game
- Game where you play along with famous songs.
- Added to the app in 2023.
Successful app
- 750,000+ active users.
- 300,000+ downloads per month.
Key insights
- Piano app and the in-app Play along game are functional and visually hardly integrated with each other.
- Play along game was really added “as is” back then.
- Statistics show that for many users, when they discover the “Play along game”, this has a positive impact on engagement metrics.
- Play along game users spend more time in the app, play more often, and renew their monthly subscriptions more often.
TASK 1. Redesign the app's core structure
- investigating how to improve the logical coherence between (what now feels like) two separate worlds within the app.
- Proposal design (hi-fi wireframe) where the above things come together.
- Elaborate in detail of the core structure and interaction flows within the chosen solution.
- Clear briefing for developers.
TASK 2. Improve engagement metrics with game engagement loops
Some of the metrics to increase:
- Number of first time users of Play along game.
- Number of first time users of Play along game returning to play again.
- Number of times per month that Play along users return to the game.
- Number of app users who renew their monthly subscription.
Tasks:
- Mapping which game engagement loops are already present.
- investigating or/how these existing game engagement loops can be improved.
- investigating whether there are unused game engagement loops that can be added to increase the engagement metrics mentioned.
- investigating how to do this in a way that prevents them from losing Play piano users who have no (current) interest in the game
- Create conceptual sketches of solutions.
- Elaborate in detail of the chosen solution (s).
- Clear briefing for developers.
TASK 3. Improve visual coherence
- investigating how to improve the visual coherence between the Play piano part and the Play along game.
- Proposal design how visual coherence can be improved.
- Visually elaborate in detail of the chosen solution (s).
- Clear briefing for developers.
The in-house 'music studio' where you will be working includes a product manager, growth manager, a QA specialist, iOS developers and you as a dedicated product designer.
There is a lead designer in the organization who you can go to with your questions, but he does not play a substantive role in your project. You report to the lead designer but you operate autonomously. Within the music studio, you are responsible for the UX and UI design of the app. For this role, we are therefore looking for an autonomous designer with a lot of experience.
The team works in a hybrid way and is present at the office in Haarlem between 1 to 3 days a week.
The scope of this project is as unique as it is challenging. How often have you been asked to optimize the engagement metrics of an iOS game with more than 750,000 active users?
In this project, you will not work under, but alongside, the in-house design lead. Within the music studio, you are responsible for the app's UX and UI design.
An important goal of this assignment is to ensure that users stay active in the Piano app longer. But of course, this also has a human aspect to it. If this works, this also automatically means that you help hundreds of thousands of people enjoying themselves playing music.
